We did a multi-camera shoot of Singapore Lyric Opera’s production of La Bohème at Esplanade tonight.

I was most intrigued by the well-designed set that so effectively portrayed 1930s Paris and the poor working class of that time. The gate scene was one of my favorite, as the set so exquisitely depicted the segregation of two classes of people – those shivering in the cold outside the gate and those inside. The set also has two storeys, adding more realism and dynamism to the spatial layout and movement of performers.

Another scene which I loved is Act 2, where the the lively people along the streets juxtaposed with Act 1.

The cast of Kota Murakami, Nancy Yuen and Song Kee Chang gave a brilliant and passionate performance of Giacomo Puccini’s most famous opera. I even overheard the audience crying away during the moving Act 4.

This is the first time to see Opera in Singapore and I was surprised by the quality of the performance and the direction of it. The story line is very simple so sometimes it felt boring for the audience. Nevertheless, this evening casts gave it a fresh interpretation with their singing. Though the first act was a bit soft and too moderate, the third and fourth act really showed their passion and love for singing. With the well organized and conducted Symphony, we could enjoy the Puccini’s world fully. Five popcorn :) Must see it!
